The Challenge.
Our team, four serving members of The Royal Yorkshire Regiment, will embark on one of the ultimate tests of physical and mental fortitude – rowing a 7m boat 2800 miles across the Pacific Ocean between Monterey, California and Hawaii.
The Army has provided plenty of challenge and excitement in our careers (some of it unwanted and unexpected), and has brought us together again for this test of planning, training, preparation and fortitude.
In 2006 four other members of our Regiment spent 76 days at sea crossing the Atlantic. Completion of The World’s Toughest Row - Pacific would mean us being the only Regiment in the Army to have crossed both oceans.
Why are we doing it?
Outside of the obvious benefits of raising funds for some fantastic charities we believe the transformational effects of joining the British Army are exceptional for all who pass through our ranks. We recruit from all walks of life, and some of our young people arrive disadvantaged and disengaged from training, education and employment. With us they find their first success, their self-belief and their confidence. The crew hope that in some small way, completing the race will inspire people to follow us and give them the confidence to try something similar.
